PROPOSING DISRUPTIVE
SEX EDUCATION

SEXUALITY EDUCATION IS A
FUNDAMENTAL AND UNIVERSAL RIGHT

UNESCO defines sex education as: The discipline that seeks to give young people the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values they need to define and enjoy their sexuality (physical and emotional) individually or in relationships. What to do when that right is not being exercised to the extent it should be?

PROBLEM

The Spanish Ministry of Education realizes that it is not enough to arrange specific workshops on sex education in schools. It wants to remedy this, and seeks a disruptive solution that will be a reference for Europe.

The Z and T generations are educating themselves in sexuality practically on their own.

THE CHALLENGE

Families and schools have lost a big battle that has been won, among others, by the pornography industry: 33% of all boys and 17% of all girls use pornography to learn about sex.

My team and I need to will need to walk in young people’s shoes, in order to understand what is truly relevant to them. The more we are able to walk in their shoes, the easier it will be for us to understand them and identify what can genuinely bring them value. A new highly complex and broad challenge is to seek an effective solution.

DESIGN THINKING

After all the research conducted during the first diamond of the Design Thinking methodology, we reached several conclusions.

  • Sex education is occasional, scarce, not longitudinal, and is not updated
    when really needed.
  • It should be a transversal subject taught by professionals.
  • Young people first address technological supports (Internet, YouTube,…) the first option to access information, and they contrast this opinion with their friends.
  • There is a certain shyness in young people to deal with these subjects within the family, and will only discuss it in an emergency or extreme situation.
  • Adults have little knowledge of the matter.
THE SOLUTION

MAS+: Sex Education Museum  (Museo del Aprendizaje de la Sexualidad).
All our parameters resulted in an interactive museum where young people could learn and have fun in an environment created by the best professionals.

It is not only a space that enriches teaching, but also serves as a cultural activity for young people to attend both alone and with their families, thus breaking deeply-rooted taboos about sex.

To get tickets we thought of making a landing page where interested parties could get a free ticket through on-line registration.
It explains what Vamos a Mas+ is, a museum tour with the most relevant sections. The most important part is the Need to talk? section, where we provide young people with a FREE help desk in order to ask any question to a sexologist.

In the age of audiovisual information and technology, it was necessary to respond to young people’s needs in their own language. This is the introductory video that will be shown at the entrance to the museum, displayed on a large welcoming screen.

MAS+ has three routes divided by age:
6 to 10 years old
11 to 15 years
16 to 20 years
We developed the most senior group and divided the journey into several rooms.

Sensitive Corridor

The Sensitive Corridor is an immersive tour focused on creating pleasant emotions and feelings. From the very beginning, you will be enveloped by new sensations.

Hall of Mirrors

With this experience we want young people to see themselves in a different light, in order to learn to accept their bodies and increase their self-esteem.

Arcade

Education based on equality and respect through a game of true or false. A “no” is a definite no.

Interactive Table

We use the latest technology in digital interactive tables to educate and inform young people about all issues of interest.

Contraceptive Display

In this section we show them in an audiovisual way various types of contraceptives available, to make them feel safe.

Room of Screams

Teenagers feel misunderstood and frustrated, so we provide them with a place to express all their frustrations out loud.

THE RESOULTS

The proposal is in line with the objectives !

After several teenagers were introduced to the idea, the response was very clear. The idea is good. They find it attractive and groundbreaking, but are “embarrassed” to admit it. They would love to go with their friends, take pictures to upload on their Instagram account and have fun while learning about such a sensitive subject. The fact is that young people feel there is a listening ear.

This methodology allows you to gain perspective on complex issues, enabling an in-depth analysis of aspects that really matter to the user, evidencing that innovation is viable and increases the chances of success.
